International driving laws require some trailers imported from the UK to have a certain registration number. Sequenced in one capital letter followed by a line of seven digits and repeated identically at the bottom, this number means the trailer meets the Trailer Registration Regulations 2018. This regulation assists users in identifying standards and appropriate road laws recognised globally.
The registration plate displays the trailer’s unique identifier, often matching the towing vehicle’s plate. In the UK, this plate is required by law and must be visible at the rear of the trailer. For international travel, trailers use a special format: one letter followed by seven numbers arranged in two rows, ensuring compliance with regulations and aiding in identification and safety on the road.
If you want a trailer number plate, visit a Registered Number Plate Supplier (RNPS). Once you have completed your online trailer registration, you will receive the trailer number plate authorisation certificate via email, effective for 5 days only. Finally, the original, physical UK trailer registration certificate will arrive in the post after registration is complete; this is important for getting the number plates.
When registering for a trailer number plate, the supplier will require an applicant’s means of identification and some proof of residence, such as a driver’s permit, utility bill statement, bank statement, or nationality and identity card. Only your name and further identification documents, such as your passport, your bank or building society debit or credit card, your police warrant card, or your armed forces identity card, will be required.
After completing your online registration application, the trailer number plate authorisation certificate is issued. It is emailed to you and is valid for 5 days. This certificate lets you obtain the trailer number plate from a Registered Number Plate Supplier. It serves as proof of registration during the initial period until the official UK trailer registration certificate is received by post.
